A recent study by Trinity College Dublin and St. James’s Hospital found that dexamethasone, a widely used anti-inflammatory steroid, was able to reduce inflammation induced by Mycobacterium avium while not compromising immune supporting bacterial growth.

Mycobacterium avium (M. Avium) can trigger persistent inflammation in the lungs.

The study focuses on not killing the bacteria directly, but limiting the damaging inflammation that can accompany chronic infection, according to the research published August 11 2026 in Geneng News (Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology News). The research was led by Donal Cox, PhD, senior author of the research at Trinity College Dublin.

This is a promising finding as steroidal remedies have been known to eliminate the damaging bacterial strains but also the healthy bacteria that support healthy immune systems.
