Professor Nicola Segata, a pioneer of new gut technology, and ZOE’s Chief Scientist Professor Sarah Berry identified 50 gut bacteria strongly linked to better health out of 34,000 analyzed. These bacteria are connected to inflammation, blood sugar, heart health and body fat, according to a Zoe blog updated March 23 2026. Again, the Zoe reinforces the idea that supporting the right gut bacteria to flourish helps maintain a healthy body.
This comes on the heels of Zoe scientists discovering “the first reliable and repeatable way to measure one’s microbiome health,” that were peer reviewed five times and published in Nature, according to the Zoe post. Professor Nicola Segata says this is critical because humans are 99.9% similar genetically but only 33% similar microbiologically, and it comes down to the connection between the food we eat and our gut microbiome make up.
Out of the 34,000 analyzed, Zoe scientists found 50 gut bacteria that are consistently associated with a healthy diet and conversely healthy bio- markers (cardio metabolic markers) associated with healthy individuals and their diets. Give or take, outside of these top 50, our gut microbiome can vary widely both in terms of our gut make up and what gut bacteria healthy or not healthy, from person to person; with 5-15% of our gut bacteria still unknown.
