Scientists at Johns Hopkins’ Bloomberg~Kimmel Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy, have uncovered a key missing link between a common gut bacterium and colorectal cancer, according to an October 31, 2026 Science Daily report. The bacterium, Bacteroides fragilis (BHT), produces a toxin that damages the colon’s protective lining.

Researchers have uncovered the missing step, a protein called claudin-4 that serves as an essential docking point for toxins showing new ways to protect the colon.

BHT is found in up to 20% of healthy people. However, certain strains (not all) of BHT produce a powerful toxin capable of “disrupting the colon’s protective lining, causing inflammation, and encouraging tumor growth,” says the Science Daily report.
