Huperzia serrata, or Chinese club moss, has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for reducing memory loss. with its modern discovery centered on the potent alkaloid Huperzine A, isolated in the 1980s, by scientists at the Chinese Academy of Sciences to inhibit acetylcholinesterase, boosting acetylcholine in the brain to treat cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s. It is distributed as a dietary supplement in the US.

An August 16 2025 report by Beni-Suef University Journal of Basic and Applied Sciences confirms that Acetylcholinesterase is responsible for the breakdown of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter critical for cognitive functions such as memory, learning, and attention (1). Huperzine A exhibits neuroprotective effects by preserving acetylcholine levels. Huperzine A combined with hyperbaric oxygen has a synergistic effect on improved cognitive function.

It is potent, reversible, and specific acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, extracted from the Chinese herb Huperzia serrata and its cognitive improvement effect has been proven in various animal studies conducted by the Fudan University Department of Integrative Medicine and Neurobiology, School of Basic Medical Science, Institutes of Integrative Medicine, Shanghai Medical College, China (2).
