67 percent of U.S. households eat pickles, chomping through a total of 5.2 million pickles each year, according to the Great Lakes Pickling Company. However, the popular vinegar pickling method is not true fermentation. Fermentation in brine contains truly beneficial probiotics beneficial for your gut, according to a November 15 2025 article in the Independent.

With this in mind, Dr. Saurabh Sethi, Harvard-trained gastroenterologist, shares his list of the healthiest foods for your gut and why, as described in the October 25 2025 India Times article. Here’s a partial list:

1) Garlic. Regular garlic consumption helps reduce body inflammation and support immune function.

2) Onions. Onions contain the prebiotic fiber compound fructooligosaccharides (FOS), which gut bacteria thrives on. 

3) Leeks. Leeks benefits your heart health, improves digestion, and strengthens your immune system.

4) Asparagus. High in inulin content, asparagus supports our body’s natural detoxification process, enables faster gut bacteria to multiply.

5) Chicory Root. contains 65% inulin by weight. When we consume chicory root, it increases the beneficial bacteria, and supports liver wellness.
