A recent survey of 103,000 soda drinkers were linked to a vulnerability to Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)Trusted Source, a fat in the liver not due to alcohol consumption. The survey includes both sugar- sweetened and low or non – sugar sweetened drinks.

However, such a loose connection of soda drinking to liver disease does not necessarily and conclusively demonstrate soda consumption as causing liver disease.

The researcher and author Lihe Liu, a graduate student in the Department of Gastroenterology at the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University in Suzhou, China, to Medical News Today says the study used data from the UK Biobank.

Researchers examined data from 103,251 participants who did not have baseline liver disease. The median follow-up was a little over 10 years, and during this time “949 participants developed MASLD, and 103 died from liver-related causes.”
