There are signs, among their well published health benefits, that coffee consumption can also contribute to a balanced gut microbiome. Among the trillion- plus bacteria and fungi as part of a balanced human gut, a small study found that coffee consumption can increase Bacteroides, Porphyromonas and Prevotella in our gut. This is based a study of 147 healthy individuals.
In a much broader study reported by Nature’s November 18 2024 issue, 22,000 shotgun metagenomic samples were studied in participants who provided detailed reports on long-term coffee consumption, showing an increase in the Lawsonibacter asaccharolyticus among participants. The aforementioned strains are considered important to maintaining a balanced and healthy gut.
Coffee is consumed almost worldwide and has been shown to exert beneficial effects on human health, including lowering all-cause and cardiovascular disease-specific mortality1,2, risks of type 2 diabetes3,4, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease5 and cancer6,7, as well as other diseases8,9 (according to the Nature report).
