We’ve heard of green companies and products, and now there are “green” microorganisms.

Rajesh Sani, a professor of chemical and biological engineering at South Dakota Mines, and his team came across a type of bacteria with a unique ability to turn carbon dioxide into crystals at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. The KOTA TV reported scientists who found a collection of over 800 microorganisms.

Sani and his colleague Dr. Tanvi Govil see huge potential for oil drilling companies that pay taxes on their carbon emissions. These companies may be able to inject these bacteria into oil wells, reducing pollution and cutting costs, according to the authors.
