Researchers from the Ludwig-Maximilians Universität München (LMU) and the LMU University Hospital developed a new method called wildDISCO that 3D maps the entire structures of the body using fluorescent markers, according to a July 10, 2023 article in Phys.org.
LMU scientists Dr. Ali Ertürk, Dr. Hongcheng Mai and Dr. Jie Luo mapped mouse body atlases, including the nervous system, protein expression, lymphatic vessels, blood vessels, and immune cells.
Ai integration enables details of complex biological systems. The team already discovered the integral role the gut microbiome plays in the development of the enteric nervous system.
The scientists believe it will reduce reliance on animal testing, while increasing efficiency of understanding diseases and developing new treatments.
