Lindsey A. Edwards, PhD, from the Institute of Liver Studies, King’s College London, England, found that fecal microbiota transplants (FMT) can reset gut health, according to a June 23 2023 report by Medscape Medical News.
The pilot study showed that FMT strengthened the gut function and immune response, as well as ammonia metabolism in patients with cirrhosis.
Fecal transplants can improve gut health by modifying the gut microbiome and reducing ammonia levels in patients with cirrhosis.
“FMT offers a different way of beneficially modifying the microbiome that is safe for patients with chronic liver disease,” added co-investigator Debbie L. Shawcross, MD, also from King’s College London in the Medscape News report.
Another report by Medical News Today published February 13 2023 show gut microbe links to other immune symptoms such as myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). Two studies found a lack of butyrate production in the gut, possibly caused by a deficiency of of the body’s main butyrate producing bacteria, Faecalibacterium prausnitzii.
Edwards points out that fecal transplants have two key benefits when resetting a patient’s gut microbiome: it replaces potentially deadly bacteria and returns healthy beneficial bacteria to the patient.
